Route overview

Colour across the spring landscape

This circuit crosses the Bulb and Dune region, where flowering bulbs can form broad stripes of colour across the fields. Keukenhof is the best-known landmark, but much of the pleasure comes from travelling at bicycle speed through the surrounding working landscape.

The route is strongly seasonal. Bulbs generally flower between late March and early May, with the precise timing dependent on the variety and that year’s weather. The second half of April has traditionally offered a good chance of seeing a broad display, but it is never guaranteed.

Check before setting out

Opening dates, admission arrangements and flower conditions change by season. Confirm current Keukenhof information and local access before your ride. Outside the bulb season, consider another day trip in the region.

This is a working agricultural area. Stay on public paths, do not enter fields and leave gateways clear. Slow down where paths are busy with visitors stopping for photographs.

Confirm current flowering conditions, access information and expected weather.

Arrange the bicycle

Check rental availability in advance and inspect brakes, tyres, lights and fit.

Save a fallback

Keep the shorter option available if wind, crowds or rain slow your progress.

Route FAQ

Practical questions

Useful details for planning a first ride through the bulb-growing region.

When is the best time to see tulips?

Flowering often falls between late March and early May, with the second half of April traditionally a useful target. Weather and crop schedules mean there is no guaranteed date.

Which route length should I choose?

The 31 km option suits a shorter day or slower pace. Choose 38 km if you have enough time and are comfortable adding roughly half an hour of riding.

Can I start at Keukenhof?

Yes, the gardens in Lisse are an alternative starting point. Check current bicycle rental, parking and access arrangements before travelling.

Can I arrive by train?

Voorhout station is the stated starting point. Check the current rail timetable and any rules affecting bicycle carriage or OV-bicycle access.

Is the route suitable outside flower season?

It remains a ride through the regional landscape, but the main display is seasonal. Another listed day trip may be more rewarding outside the flowering period.

May I enter the fields for photographs?

No. The fields are working agricultural land. Stay on public paths and roads, respect signs and avoid blocking entrances.
