Exploring southern Walcheren

From canal-side Middelburg to the North Sea coast

This 49 km loop explores the southern half of the Walcheren peninsula, a Zeeland landscape shaped by beaches, natural dunes, engineered sea dykes and low-lying polders.

From Vlissingen, the route follows the Walcheren canal towards historic Middelburg. It then crosses open polder country to Oostkapelle before reaching the coast near Domburg. The return leg passes Westkapelle and follows the shoreline back towards Vlissingen.

Vlissingen is the route’s lively maritime anchor. Middelburg adds historic streets and architecture, while Domburg and Westkapelle bring a distinctly coastal character. In summer, sandy beaches provide opportunities for a longer pause, but secure your bicycle and check local access signs before leaving the route.

Coastal conditions: exposed sections can feel significantly harder in a headwind. Check a short-range forecast, carry an extra layer and keep enough time in reserve for the final coastal kilometres.

Four distinct stages around Walcheren

The precise experience depends on your direction of travel, navigation choice and local conditions. Use these places as a framework rather than turn-by-turn instructions.

Vlissingen to Middelburg

Settle into the ride beside the Walcheren canal, moving inland from the maritime edge towards Zeeland’s historic provincial capital.

Polders to Oostkapelle

Leave the denser streets for open agricultural land, where wind and wide sightlines become an important part of the ride.

Domburg to Westkapelle

Meet the North Sea coast, passing dunes, seaside surroundings and imposing sea defences along an exposed section.

Coast to Vlissingen

Follow the coastal landscape south, keeping time and energy in hand for the final approach to the starting point.
