Route overview

Two sides of Haarlem in one ride

This route reveals two contrasting landscapes around Haarlem: the characteristically Dutch polders to the east and the sand dunes and beaches to the west. Its highlights include the dunes of National Park Zuid-Kennemerland and Haarlem’s historic centre.

From the bridge over the Spaarne, the route opens with a view of Haarlem’s skyline. It then leaves the city for flat, open polders and the villages of Penningsveer, Spaarnwoude and Spaarndam.

Several fortifications belonging to the Defence Line of Amsterdam appear along this part of the circuit. From Santpoort, the ride enters the dunes of National Park Zuid-Kennemerland and continues towards the seaside resort of Zandvoort. The final stage follows the former tram alignment back towards central Haarlem.
