Rivers, villages and forts

A varied loop south and east of Amsterdam

This route traces winding rivers through the remarkably quiet rural area just south of Amsterdam. The flat, open landscape gives occasional views back towards the capital’s skyline, while Muiderslot and the fortifications around Amsterdam add a historic dimension.

Ride beside the Amstel—the river from which Amsterdam takes its name—to Ouderkerk aan de Amstel. The route then follows the Bullewijk, Waver, Winkel and Gein towards Abcoude and the fortified town of Weesp.

From Weesp, continue beside the Vecht to Muiderslot at Muiden, near the former Zuiderzee shoreline. The return leg leads through Diemerpark and back into central Amsterdam. Although the landscape is predominantly flat, wind, junctions and sightseeing stops can extend the day.

Along the way

Four distinct route chapters

Allow enough time to enjoy the transition from city streets to riverside villages, fortified towns and open water landscapes.

Amstel & Ouderkerk

Leave the centre along the river and settle into a calmer rhythm as the city gives way to waterside homes and open land.

Abcoude & the Gein

Small winding rivers, bridges and rural views define this quiet part of the route south of Amsterdam.

Weesp & Muiden

Pass through a fortified town and follow the Vecht towards Muiden and its waterfront defences.

Muiderslot & Diemerpark

See the medieval castle before turning west through greener urban edges towards central Amsterdam.
