Former island near Amsterdam

A varied circuit through Waterland

This route explores Waterland, a region whose history and appearance have long been shaped by water. Its focal point is Marken, a former island known for elevated wooden houses, a compact fishing harbour and the lighthouse called the Paard van Marken.

After crossing to Amsterdam North, the ride leaves the city behind surprisingly quickly. Waterside stretches lead towards the picturesque villages of Durgerdam and Uitdam before the route reaches Marken.

The return passes through quieter rural settlements including Zuiderwoude, Holysloot and Ransdorp. Ransdorp’s broad church tower is visible from far away across the flat landscape, while narrow waterways and open pasture emphasise how close peaceful countryside lies to central Amsterdam.

The stated times are riding estimates rather than a complete day plan. Add time for navigation, ferry waits, photographs, food and exploring Marken on foot. Wind across exposed dikes can also have a substantial effect on pace.

Water is part of every stage

The route’s character comes from its relationship with the IJsselmeer, smaller lakes, dikes and reclaimed land. Exposed sections can feel very different according to wind direction, so the same circuit may demand more time on another day.

Villages provide natural pauses, but do not assume that every service or ferry will operate when you arrive. Carry water and a snack, save the GPX file offline and confirm crossings before departure.

Route FAQ

Before riding to Marken

Concrete answers to common planning questions for this Waterland circuit.

Which distance should I choose?

Choose the 45 km option if you prefer more time for stops or expect strong wind. The 51 km route suits riders comfortable with a longer day and extra riding time.

Is the stated time a full-day estimate?

No. It is an approximate riding time. Add time for ferry waits, navigation, food, photographs and exploring Marken.

Do I need the GPX file?

It is useful, especially if signs are missed or a diversion occurs. Download it before departure and keep a backup overview or junction list.

Should I check ferry times?

Yes. Ferry availability can vary, and crossings may be affected by schedules, season or conditions. Confirm current operation before riding.

What kind of bicycle is suitable?

A comfortable, well-maintained bicycle suitable for paved paths is appropriate for many riders. Check brakes, tyres, gears, lights and fit before departure.

How exposed is the route?

Several dike and polder sections are open to the wind. Check direction and strength before setting off and allow extra time when riding into a headwind.
