The LF Coastal Route—LF Kustroute in Dutch—follows the country’s exposed western and northern edges. It is the Dutch section of the North Sea Cycle Route, also known as EuroVelo 12.

Natural dunes give way to the Delta Works, dikes and other feats of water engineering. The route also reaches old fishing villages and seaside resorts, with frequent opportunities to leave the bicycle for a beach walk.

Harlingen and Lauwersoog provide gateways to the Wadden Islands. The journey across the Afsluitdijk reveals the scale of the 32-kilometre barrier separating the Wadden Sea from the former Zuiderzee.

Character of the ride

One coastline, many distinct landscapes

This is more than a continuous beach ride. It passes the tidal waters of Zeeland, urban South Holland, North Holland’s dune belt, the Afsluitdijk and the open Wadden Sea coast.

Route essentials

Build a workable coastal itinerary

Treat the route as a framework rather than a fixed schedule. Wind direction, ferries and exposed crossings can significantly affect the time needed for a stage.

How to plan it

Turn 610 kilometres into manageable stages

A coastal tour works best when the itinerary leaves room for weather, crossings and the places you want to explore away from the route.

Choose a direction

Consider the forecast wind, transport access and where you want to finish.

Set flexible stages

Balance daily distance with towns, accommodation and exposed sections.

Verify crossings

Check ferries, major works and temporary diversions close to departure.

Keep a fallback

Identify rail connections and shorter alternatives for difficult conditions.

Common questions

Before taking on the coast

Practical answers for planning a multi-day journey along the Dutch shoreline.

How long should I allow for the complete route?

The answer depends on your pace, wind and sightseeing plans. Divide 610 km by a comfortable daily distance, then add time for ferries, towns, beaches and possible weather changes.

Which direction is best?

There is no universally best direction. Review the forecast near departure, along with your travel connections and accommodation sequence. Coastal wind can matter more than elevation.

Is the route suitable for a touring bicycle?

A comfortable, well-maintained touring, hybrid or similar bicycle is appropriate for predominantly paved riding. Reliable brakes, lights and luggage attachment are important.

Do I need to reserve accommodation?

Advance booking is sensible in seaside resorts, island gateways and busy periods, particularly when secure bicycle storage is important.

Can I shorten the trip using rail?

Rail can provide useful alternatives near parts of the route. Bicycle carriage rules vary by service, time and bicycle type, so check current operator conditions before relying on a connection.

What should I carry for coastal weather?

Bring layers, a breathable waterproof, sun protection, water and reliable front and rear lights. Secure loose luggage before exposed dikes and barriers.

Are ferry connections guaranteed?

No. Timetables, seasonal operation and routes can change. Verify each essential crossing shortly before riding and retain a land-based alternative where possible.
